While it’s important to focus on
improving your funeral home
and its
technology solutions, you can’t forget about yourself. Without proper self-care, your stress may lead to burnout and compassion fatigue.
So, to take the best care of your firm’s client families, it all starts with taking care of yourself. We’ve come up with a few self-care tips for funeral directors to get you started!
Stay Active to Improve Your Mental and Physical Health
Exercising isn’t just for your physical health; it helps improve your mental health too! By staying active, you can relieve stress, improve your overall mood, reduce your risk of heart disease, and several other benefits.
Plus, there are many ways to stay active! No matter what your comfort level with exercising is, there’s something for everyone! For example, you can join a gym, try yoga, or sign up for a virtual class. Or, if being in a gym isn’t your thing, you can do plenty of exercises in your own home. Even better, get outside whenever you can! Whether it’s running or walking, both activities get you moving. You can even make it a group activity with your firm’s entire team.
Eat Healthy and Nutritious Foods
If you eat good, you’ll feel good and have more energy! Instead of grabbing junk food when you’re craving a snack, grab a healthy, nutritious alternative. Of course, it’s okay to treat yourself every now and then; it’s all about balance.
One way to encourage healthy eating is to provide your firm’s employees with healthy snacks. For instance, you can have fruit and granola bars available in your firm’s break area.
Spend Time with Your Loved Ones To take care of your mental health, make sure that the people you surround yourself with make you happy rather than more stressed. Spend time with your loved ones, whether it’s a family dinner or calling a friend that you haven’t talked to in a while.
Don’t forget to take time for yourself too! Whether that means doing one of your favorite hobbies or taking a nap. We’ll get more into those ideas next!
Make Time for Your Hobbies and Interests
Take some time each day for one of your hobbies or trying something new that you’ve always wanted to do. It can be something relaxing like listening to music or writing your thoughts down in a journal. Or your activity can be something that’s more active like biking or fishing – then you’re staying active at the same time!
Unplug from Your Devices
To practice self-care, take some time away from your devices. This includes not checking your messages and unplugging for a little while. It can be for a short walk, reading a book, or another activity that doesn’t involve technology.
Take a Nap to Recharge
Don’t feel bad about taking a nap to recharge. Just make sure that you don’t nap for too long, or else you may end up feeling more tired than before. According to
SleepFoundation.org, a 10- to 20-minute-long nap is recommended. By taking a nap, you can wake up feeling more energized and less stressed.
You also should make sure you get enough sleep each night. Per
SleepFoundation.org, adults should get anywhere between 7-9 hours of sleep every night.
