When it comes to having a
well-designed website, there are many components to consider. From the functionality and the overall design to its security measures and helpful resources, all these features work together to create an exceptional user experience.
To give you a better idea of how much these website features matter, we’ve compiled some eye-opening statistics about websites. We researched the impact of
responsive design, importance of
security
to users, trends in
online payments, and so much more. Check out what we found below:
1. 94% of first impressions relate to your website’s design.
Per
WebFX, your website’s design plays a major factor in people’s first impressions of your business. If a website has a mobile-friendly design, 74% of users are more likely to visit the website again. If you don’t have a responsive design that responds to all device types, people may go elsewhere. After a poor user experience on a website, 89% of people shop with a competitor instead. A poor experience can include the website load time, as 83% of people expect a website to load in three seconds or less.
2. 96% of Americans own cellphones.
According to
Pew Research Center, 81% of those cellphone users have smartphones. This means that many people are accessing your website from their mobile device. One in five Americans access the internet solely by smartphone. So, if your website is optimized for desktop but not the mobile experience, you may be turning off potential clients.
3. It’s not just young adults who own smartphones.
Also per
Pew Research Center, these are the age ranges who own smartphones: 96% of U.S. adults ages 18-29, 92% of U.S. adults ages 30-49, 79% of U.S. adults ages 50-64, and 53% of U.S. adults ages 65 and older. As you can see, even older adults have smartphones and may be accessing your website from it.
4. You only get one first impression.
According to
three studies, they found that it takes users just 50 milliseconds to form an opinion about your website. That’s only 0.05 seconds to make a good first impression. You only get one first impression, so you want to make sure it counts with a well-designed website.
5. More than 50% of users would leave an unsecured website.
Per
Comodo, almost 51% of users would leave a website immediately if it isn't secure. Browsers like Google Chrome make it easy to people to tell if a website is secure. By displaying warning messages, even your less tech savvy families can tell if a website is safe. According to
Blue Corona, 84% of users would abandon their online purchase if their data would be sent over an insecure connection, and 82% of users won’t even browse an unsecured website. To make sure your website is secure, you should have an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate that encrypts the data sent between your web server and browser.
6. Ecommerce has grown by more than 30% in the U.S. this year.
Instead of the originally predicted 18%,
eMarketer
reported that the COVID-19 pandemic made this percent rise quicker than expected. Online payments were already increasing, but the pandemic certainly made it jump higher. Before the pandemic, online payments were about convenience. Now, it’s also about staying safe. We didn’t think we’d reach this level of online shopping until 2022. Even after the pandemic, families will want the convenience of online payments, so if your website doesn’t offer this, you may be falling behind.
